You can find Madan Lal Karyana Store at Shop No 1 on Dapai Road in the Islamabad Nagar area. We are very close to the railway phatak, so I spend a lot of time watching the trains go by and waiting for the gates to open. The traffic stops right in front of the shop sometimes, and people hop off their scooters to grab a quick pack of cigarettes or a bottle of water. I have been in this location for many years now. It is a traditional karyana store where we keep everything from loose flour to bottled pickles. The building is a bit old and the paint is peeling in some corners, but it serves its purpose. I keep the shop open even when the weather is very cold in the winter. My brother helps me manage the inventory because we get a lot of deliveries throughout the week. We use a lot of handwritten slips for the regular customers who pay at the end of the month. It is a system of trust that we have built up over a long time. Amritsar is a busy city, but our little corner feels like its own small world. I don't use any modern computers for the billing. I prefer the old way of doing things with a calculator and a pen. It is just a straightforward local business for the people living nearby.
