Kalra General Store

Kalra General Store is situated in Katra Karam Singh in Amritsar, very close to the Post Office. Being near the Post Office is handy because people come there for their mail and then realize they need some tea leaves or sugar from me. The winters in Amritsar can be very chilly, so I usually have a small heater near my feet and a glass of hot tea on the counter. The shop is packed with shelves that go all the way to the ceiling, and I have a small ladder I use to reach the stuff on the top. We stock a lot of the local brands that people here prefer. The floor is made of old stone, and it stays cool even when the sun is out. I have lived in this area most of my life, so I know the history of almost every house on this street. The store is not a modern place with barcodes; we just know the prices by heart. Sometimes I help the older ladies carry their bags to the door because those bags of flour can be quite heavy. We have a steady flow of people throughout the day, and it is usually just me managing everything from the morning opening till we close at night. It is a simple business, just providing what the local families need for their daily lives without any extra fuss or noise.
