Appu General Store

Majitha Road is always moving. Shop No. 7 is where we sit. It’s near the Gurudwara Sahib so we see a lot of people passing through. We’ve got the usual stuff people need for their houses. It’s not a big fancy place. Sometimes the crates get piled up too high and we have to move things around to find what someone asked for. We open up early and stay till the evening. Nagina Avenue has its own rhythm. We know most of the people who come in by their first names. It’s just how it is in this part of Amritsar. Some days the fans don't work right and it gets hot, but you just keep going. We don't have a big staff, just us making sure the shelves aren't empty. It’s a lot of lifting and counting. You learn what the neighbors like to buy. Dealing with the change and the loose packets takes up most of the time. There’s always some dust coming in from the road. We try to keep it clean but it’s a constant battle. That’s just the reality of having a shop here. Nothing more to it really. We are just here doing the daily work at Appu General Store. We handle the inventory ourselves and it can be a bit much sometimes when the new stock arrives. We just put it on the floor and deal with it as the day goes on.
