Nss Higher Secondary School

Nss Higher Secondary School is out in Kavalam, which is a beautiful but sometimes quiet part of Alappuzha. Being in this area means we are surrounded by greenery and the typical landscape of the backwaters. The school itself is a simple structure that has seen a lot of batches pass through its doors. Life in Kavalam moves at its own pace, and the school follows that. Most of the students come from the nearby villages, often walking or taking small boats if they live across the water. The rooms are basic with wooden benches that have been used for a long time. During the rainy season, the sound of the rain on the roof is so loud that we often have to stop talking and just wait for it to pass. We don't have any of those modern glass buildings you see in the cities. Everything here is functional and a bit old-fashioned. The teachers often sit together in the small staff room during the breaks, sharing food and talking about local news. It’s a community feel more than anything else. Alappuzha is a humid place, so we all just get used to the sweat and the damp air. The school ground is mostly dirt and grass, where the kids play during their free time. It’s just a honest, local school serving the people living in this corner of the district. We’ve been here for years and we just keep going.
