Our workshop is over in Phase 4 of Vatva G.I.D.C., right near the Ramol Cross Road. It’s an industrial area, so there’s always the sound of machines and heavy trucks passing by the Akshardham Estate. We handle engineering and fabrication work here, which mostly involves a lot of sweat and heavy lifting. We have a variety of machines for cutting and shaping metal, and they take up most of the floor space. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear your best clothes. There’s iron filings everywhere and the smell of oil is pretty strong. We take our work seriously, even if the office is just a small corner with a couple of chairs and a cluttered desk. We work on projects for other factories and construction sites. Sometimes a client comes in with a rough sketch on a napkin and we have to figure out how to make it into a real, functioning piece of equipment. It takes a lot of measuring and double-checking. We’ve had some long nights when a deadline is close, and we just stay until the job is done. The crew here is small but they know their way around a lathe and a welding kit. We don’t do much talking; we just get the metal moving and the parts built. It’s a noisy, busy place but we like it that way because it means we are getting things done for the people who need them.
