Peoples Umbrella Mfg. Co.

If you know the Chickpet area, you know how crowded it gets, especially around the Cross. We are located in Venkusahuji Lane, right in the street opposite to Kuberan Silks. Peoples Umbrella Mfg. Co. has been making umbrellas in this spot for many years. When you walk into our place, you’ll see piles of fabric, metal frames, and handles everywhere. It’s a bit of a mess, honestly, but we know where everything is. The lane is quite narrow, so getting supplies in and out can be a bit of a struggle sometimes. We have people who have been with us for a long time, sitting and sewing the covers or fixing the springs. It’s a very hands-on job. During the monsoon season, the whole place gets very busy and a bit chaotic, but the rest of the year we just keep steady. We don’t have a big storefront with lights; it’s more of a workshop where the actual manufacturing happens. The sounds of the sewing machines and the voices from the street are always in the background. It’s a humble business, and we don’t try to make it sound like more than it is. We make things to keep people dry, and we’ve been doing it right here in this lane for as long as I can remember.
