Working out of Rakanpur Village Road is a bit different than being in the middle of a big city. You still see cows walking past the gate while we’re inside running the heavy machinery. Our building at 769 is basically just one big open space with a high roof. It gets loud when the grinders are going, and the sound echoes off the metal sheets. We do a lot of custom work here, so there’s always something new being measured or cut. We don’t have a receptionist, so if the phone rings, whoever is closest to the office area just picks it up. The floor is stained with oil and there are piles of scrap metal in the backyard that we eventually sell off. We spend a lot of time looking at drawings and trying to figure out how to make things fit together better. The road outside can get pretty muddy when it rains, making it a mess for the staff to get in, but we just keep our boots by the door. We aren’t interested in looking like a big corporation. We’re just a bunch of people who like working with our hands and seeing a project through from a raw piece of steel to something useful. Lunch is usually a quick affair before we get back to the machines. It’s just our daily life here in Rakanpur, keeping the gears turning as best as we can.
