Out here at Survey No 423/P on the Sarkhej Bawla Highway, the view is mostly open space and other factories. We are near the village of Moraiya in the Sanand taluka, so it’s a bit of a trek from the main city. At Mamta Machinery, the days are filled with the sound of welding and metal being moved around. It gets quite dusty because of the construction nearby and the trucks passing on the highway. We’ve got a large shed where the machines are put together piece by piece. It’s heavy work, and by the end of the day, everyone is usually covered in a bit of oil or iron filings. We have a small office area, but most of the action happens on the floor. During the monsoon, the rain on the tin roof is so loud you can’t hear yourself talk. We just wait it out and keep working. Sometimes the power goes out, and we have to switch over to the generator, which adds to the noise. We eat our tiffins together in the break area and talk about whatever is going on in the village. It’s a straightforward life here. No one puts on airs. We just focus on the steel and the bolts and making sure the machines are built solid before they get loaded onto the trailers for transport. It’s hard work, but it’s what we do day in and day out.
