Jay Bholenath Cooker Centre

If you walk through the busy lanes of Manick Chowk and find Mandvi Pole, you’ll see us at No.1769. We are right across from the Sewa Sangh building. Jay Bholenath Cooker Centre is a small shop, but it’s always packed with pressure cookers of all shapes and sizes. We’ve been here in this old part of the city for a long time. People bring in their old cookers that have stopped whistling or have leaky gaskets, and we sit on our low stools and fix them up for them. It’s a noisy job with the constant sound of metal tapping and steam valves being tested in the back. The shop is narrow, with wooden shelves going all the way to the ceiling. We know exactly which drawer holds the right spare part for a twenty-year-old model. It’s a family-run kind of thing, where everyone knows the regular folks who come in. We don't have any computers or fancy billing systems; we just write things down in a big ledger by hand. The area is always crowded with shoppers and scooters, and the smell of street food is everywhere. We take a short break in the afternoon when the sun is directly overhead, usually grabbing some tea and snacks from the guy with the cart nearby. It’s not a high-tech business, just manual skill and a lot of patience with old machinery. We enjoy the chatter of the market and being part of this old neighborhood.
