B. K. Engineering Works. We are based in Bapunagar, over at No. 5 in the Vishwakarma Estate. It’s right across from the Raghunath Hindi High School. You can hear the kids playing during their breaks. L.B.S. Road is always jammed with traffic. It’s a busy area. The shop is full of machines and the smell of cutting oil. It’s not the cleanest place but we work hard. We have been here for a long time. The estate is full of other small shops. We all know each other. Sometimes we go out for tea at the corner stall. The summer in Ahmedabad is brutal. We have a couple of big fans but they just move the hot air around. We keep the shutters open for some breeze. Most of our day is spent at the lathes or welding. We don't have fancy office chairs. Just some wooden stools and a metal desk for the invoices. It’s a practical setup. We don't spend money on things we don't need. People come to us when they have something broken or need a part made. We just look at the piece and tell them if we can do it. Most of the time we can. It’s just steady work from morning till evening. We like it that way. No one here is trying to be anything we aren't. We just do the engineering work and go home.
