My barber shop is on Kagarol Road in the Kirawali area of Agra district. Most people around here just know me as Titu. I have been cutting hair in this same little shop for over ten years now. It is a very basic setup with two old-fashioned chairs and some large mirrors on the walls that have seen better days. I provide haircuts and shaves for the men and kids from the village. The road outside is not paved perfectly, so it gets very dusty whenever a tractor or bus goes past. I spend a lot of time with a broom in my hand trying to keep the hair and dust away. I do not use any electric clippers, just my trusty scissors and a straight razor for the shaves. There is no air conditioning here, just a small table fan that wobbles when it is on high speed. People come to my shop not just for a haircut but to sit and talk about the crops, the weather, or what is happening in the town. It is a local meeting spot for many of the older men. I have a small battery-powered radio that plays film songs from the nineties while I work. I learned this trade from my uncle who had a shop in Agra city, but I like the quiet life here in Kirawali much better. The shop is right next to my house.
