Ghanshyam Hair Dresser is located right in the middle of the Main Bazar of Sikandra, Agra. Being in the heart of the main market means it is always loud outside and there is always some kind of commotion happening on the street. We’ve been at this spot for many years, and the shop has become a bit of a landmark for the people who live and work nearby. It’s a very traditional barber shop setup. We have those old-style, heavy iron chairs that have seen a lot of use over the decades. We handle haircuts, beard trims, and traditional head massages. The head massages are actually quite popular with the men here after they finish a long day of work in the market. We use a lot of water and spray bottles, so the floor is usually a bit wet and covered in hair until we sweep at the end of the shift. The walls have some old, curled-up pictures of different hair styles, mostly from several years back. People come in to chat about the news as much as they do for a haircut. We know all the local gossip from the bazar. It’s not the kind of place you go for anything too complicated. You just come in, sit down, tell us what you want, and we get to work. Agra gets very dusty, so we are constantly wiping down the mirrors and the counters. It’s just a straightforward, honest business.
