The group here at Thoothukudi Millets Farmer Producer Company Limited started because we all had the same idea about growing things the right way. We are based out of 1E/109 in Selvavinayagapuram, right in the Milavittan area. It’s mostly about the millets, which is what we know best. Dealing with the weather in Thoothukudi can be tough some years, but having a group makes it a bit easier to handle the ups and downs. We aren't fancy businessmen in suits. Most of us have dirt under our fingernails most of the time. The office in Selvavinayagapuram is where we meet to talk about seeds, rain, and who is harvesting when. It’s a practical space, nothing more. We spend our days out in the fields and then come together to figure out how to sell what we’ve grown without getting a bad deal. Sometimes the meetings go long and everyone has a different opinion, but that’s just how it is when you’re working with neighbors. We don’t have any big speeches to give. We just want to make sure the millet farming stays viable for the families here. If you walk by our place in Milavittan, you’ll probably see a few of us sitting around discussing the latest market prices or just taking a break from the sun. It’s hard work, but it’s our work, and we just keep moving one day at a time. It is not always easy, but we manage to get by through working together and keeping things honest.
