Manjunath Nagar is always busy, especially on the 80ft Road. Our spot is right across from Gurukul School, so we have to be careful when the kids are leaving for the day. There are always buses and parents on bikes everywhere. We deal in cement, which is a dusty business no matter how much you try to clean up. The bags come in heavy and they go out heavy. My back feels it some days, but that is just the nature of the work we chose. We have a small desk near the front where we sit and talk to the drivers. It’s not a quiet place because of the traffic and the loading, but it feels right to be here. Sometimes people stop by just to get out of the rain for a minute. We have a tin roof that makes a lot of noise when it pours, so you have to shout to be heard. We don't do much advertising; the big stacks of cement bags outside usually let people know what we are about. We keep a ledger for the regular customers who've been coming to us for years. It’s mostly just us and a couple of helpers who know the routine. We start early, around seven, to beat the worst of the heat and the school rush. By the time the sun goes down, we're usually pretty tired and ready to lock up the gate.
