Down in Thumba, we have our spot at Plot No: 30 & 31 in the Kinfra Parks. Oka Basus Metal Technologies Pvt Ltd is a bit of a mouthful to say, so we just call it the shop. Being near St.Xaviers College P.O., it’s a decent area, though the Kerala humidity can be tough on the metal if we aren't careful. We deal with a lot of technology related to metalwork, which sounds fancier than it actually feels when you're standing over a lathe. The workshop is organized, but it’s definitely a working space, not a showroom. We have scraps of aluminum and steel in bins and the floor is usually covered in fine shavings. We’ve been part of this park for a while and we know the guys in the neighboring plots. It’s a quiet kind of work, mostly focusing on the specs of whatever part we’re making that day. We don't have a mission statement on the wall; we just have a calendar and a list of things that need to be shipped out to Thiruvananthapuram or further away. Sometimes the rains make it hard to get work done, but that’s just life here. We just keep the machines oiled and do the best we can with the orders we get. It’s steady, practical work that keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday. There isn't much more to it than that, and we prefer it this way.
