About The Lawrence School – Education in The Nilgiris
Living and working up here in Ootacamund is quite different from being down in the plains. The Lawrence School sits right in the Nilgiris, surrounded by a lot of greenery and that cold mountain air that never really goes away. We have these old stone buildings that have stood against the rain and wind for a very long time. It takes a lot of effort to keep everything running when the mist rolls in and stays for days. You get used to wearing sweaters almost all year round. The campus is spread out, so there is plenty of walking involved between the different sections. It is quiet most of the time, except when the students are moving between classes or playing outside. We have trees everywhere and sometimes you see some local wildlife if you are quiet enough. The staff stays on the grounds or nearby in the hills. It is a bit of a trek to get to the main town, so we mostly stick to ourselves up here. It feels like a small village of its own. Life moves at a slower pace compared to the big cities. We don't have many shops or distractions around, just the hills and the school grounds. People here know each other well because we see the same faces every single day. It's a simple life, focused on getting through the terms and keeping the fires going in the winter months.
