It’s a busy place with a lot of noise from the machinery and the trucks constantly coming in and out of the gates. We aren't the ones milking the cows, but we are the ones making sure people actually know where to get the milk. Our office is tucked away in a corner of the building, and it’s usually filled with the sound of phones ringing and people arguing over delivery schedules. It isn't a quiet, peaceful place to work, but it’s real. We don't use a lot of fancy words to describe what we do. We just try to get the crates to the shops before the customers show up in the morning. Sometimes the weather makes it hard, or a truck breaks down, and we have to scramble to fix the problem. We eat our lunch at our desks most days because there is always a new list of orders to look at. We aren't trying to be anything we’re not. We’re just the people behind the scenes of a big dairy, trying to keep the distribution moving. It’s a lot of spreadsheets and phone calls, and not much glory, but we’ve been doing it a long time. We know the routes by heart and we know which drivers are going to be late if there’s a bit of rain. It is just the way it goes.
