MULBERRY RAW SILK INDIAN WEAVERS ASSOCIATION

You’ll find the Mulberry Raw Silk Indian Weavers Association over at Plot No 4-5-6 on Central Road No. 5 in Udyog Nagar, Udhna. It’s a large space because we occupy three plots in a row. Udhna is a major hub for industry, so the whole area is filled with factories and warehouses. There’s always a lot of activity on Road No. 5, with workers moving about and big trucks trying to back into narrow entrances. Inside our place, we deal with a lot of raw silk. It comes in big bags and has a very specific smell to it. We spend a lot of time organizing these bags and meeting with different weavers who come by to discuss their work. The building itself is pretty old and has that industrial feel with high ceilings and metal beams. It can get quite noisy when the neighboring units are running their heavy machinery. We have a small area where we sit and talk, usually over some tea. It’s not a polished environment by any means. There are stacks of paper on the desks and samples of silk thread draped over the backs of chairs. We just try to keep things organized so the weavers can get what they need. It’s a lot of manual tracking and handshakes. The dusty air of Udyog Nagar is just something we’ve gotten used to over the years. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
