Metro Chemist & Druggist is tucked into the ground floor of Atlanta Shopping Mall. We’re at Shop No 9. Althan Main Road has gotten much busier over the last few years, especially with all the new apartments like Sai Rudra right across the street. Being inside a mall is a bit different than a standalone shop. It’s a bit cooler inside, which is nice during the Surat summers. We spend a lot of our time organizing the shelves. There are so many different brands of the same medicine these days, it’s hard to keep track sometimes. We use a computer for the billing, but sometimes the internet is slow and we have to do things the old-fashioned way for a minute. It’s mostly just us working here, keeping the place tidy. We get a mix of people—shoppers from the mall and residents who just walk over from their homes. People often ask for advice on bandages or which cough syrup is better, and we just tell them what we know from experience. It’s a lot of standing on your feet all day, but you get used to it. We try to stay stocked up on the basics like soaps and shampoos too, not just the heavy medicines. It makes the shop feel more like a part of the community. Just a normal day of work for us, making sure the counter is wiped and the stock is all where it should be.
