I started Meena Dance Class here in Surat 9 because I just liked dancing and people started asking if I could teach their kids. It is not a big fancy studio with mirrors everywhere, but we have enough space for about ten people to move around without hitting each other. Most days it gets quite warm in here, even with the fans going full speed. We usually start in the afternoon when school finishes. You can hear the music from the street sometimes, and the floor is a bit scratched up from all the shoes. I spend a lot of my time showing the same steps over and over until everyone gets it right. Sometimes the parents sit on the plastic chairs near the door and just watch or talk about their day. It is mostly just local kids from the neighborhood who come by. We don't have a big stage or anything, we just practice for the joy of it. Sometimes we do some Bollywood stuff, sometimes more traditional things if that is what people want to learn. It gets a bit chaotic when the little ones arrive because they have so much energy and don't always listen, but we manage. I usually have to sweep the floor twice a day because of the dust. It is just a simple place where we try to keep the rhythm going and hope nobody trips. Nothing too complicated, just a normal dance room in the middle of the city.
