Ward 24 in the Dept Of SurgerySafdarjung Hospital Safdarjung Hospital is where you’ll find us. This part of the hospital is always on the move. There is a lot of energy here, mostly because surgery is a serious business and things happen fast. We have a lot of beds and they are almost always full. The smell of antiseptic is pretty strong in this hallway. We’ve got our station set up with computers that are a few years old and chairs that squeak when you move. It’s not a fancy place. We have charts hanging on the ends of beds and monitors beeping in the background. Our team is a mix of people who have been here forever and some newer faces. We drink a lot of coffee and tea to stay sharp during the long shifts. The lighting is bright and white, which helps when you’re looking at charts at three in the morning. We don’t have much time for small talk. Most of the day is spent checking on people after their operations or getting things ready for the next one. It’s a bit of a whirlwind. We try to keep the families informed, but sometimes it’s hard when we’re running from one room to another. The floors are cleaned constantly but they still show the age of the building. We just do the work. There’s no need for big speeches or polished ads. The results of the surgery and the patients getting better is all we really focus on.
