About Parveen Pan Bhandar – Food & Beverages in South Delhi
My father opened this little shop in Pushp Vihar a long time ago, and I’ve been sitting behind this counter ever since I finished school. It’s a small space, mostly just enough room for me and all the jars of ingredients I need for the day. I spend a lot of time just watching the people walk by on their way to the market or home from work. The evening is our busiest time when everyone stops for a bit of a break and a chat. I keep the betel leaves under a wet red cloth to stay cool because the Delhi heat is really something else in the summer months. The glass jars on my shelves are a bit old and the lids don't always screw on straight, but they hold everything just fine. I know almost everyone in this part of Pushp Vihar, so there’s always someone telling me a story about their family or complaining about the traffic. We have a small radio that usually plays old songs, though the reception isn't great. Sometimes I have to sweep the dust out three or four times a day because of the construction down the road. It’s not a fancy job, but I like being my own boss and seeing the same faces every day. People know where to find me if they need something sweet or just want to talk for five minutes. It’s just a normal neighborhood shop.
