M / S Checks N" Stripes" is based in Guru Angad Bhavan at Nehru Place. We are in G - 1 / 71, which is on the ground floor. If you know Nehru Place, you know it’s a crowded, chaotic place with people everywhere. Our shop is filled with patterns—mostly checks and stripes, like the name says. We have stacks of fabric that reach almost to the ceiling. It can get a bit dark in the back of the shop, so we use a lot of lamps to see the colors clearly. The hallway outside is always full of messengers and people looking for computer parts or clothes. We spend our day measuring out lengths of cloth and cutting them for customers who stop in. The air conditioner hums constantly, but it struggles when the door is open all the time. There is a lot of talking and bargaining going on. We keep our records in a stack of notebooks on a small wooden desk near the entrance. It’s a tight space, and we have to move boxes just to get to the telephone. Sometimes we have to run out to grab a quick snack from the vendors in the square. It’s a fast-paced environment, and you have to be quick on your feet. We’ve been in this building for quite a while, so we’ve seen the neighborhood change quite a bit over the years.
