Flying Fashions

I’ve been coming to E- 46/3 here in Okhla Phase 2 for a long time now. It’s a busy spot with a lot of noise. Flying Fashions is just what we do every day. The machines are loud and they never seem to stop, but you get used to it after a week. Sometimes the power goes out in the whole block and we just sit around on the fabric rolls and talk until it comes back on. It’s mostly fabric and thread everywhere you look in this room. My desk is covered in samples that didn't quite make the cut or had the wrong color thread. We spend a lot of time checking hems and buttons to make sure they won't fall off. It isn't glamorous work at all. Most days involve arguing with the delivery drivers about where they parked or trying to find a lost pair of fabric scissors. The tea man comes around at four and that's usually the best part of the whole afternoon. We have a lot of people working here who have been around since the very start. We know each other’s kids and what’s going on at home. Okhla is always dusty and the traffic outside is a total nightmare, but this is where the work is. We just keep our heads down and get the boxes ready for the trucks. There’s always a pile of scrap cloth in the corner that needs clearing. It’s just a normal workplace.
