The mill is situated on Khadra Road, right across from where the New Mall Godown stands. It is a very industrial part of the area, so there are always big vehicles moving in and out. The sound of the rice milling is constant from the moment we start the engines at dawn. There is a fine layer of rice husk dust that seems to get into everything, no matter how much we sweep. We spend a lot of time out in the yard checking the moisture in the paddy that the farmers bring in. The sun can be quite brutal out there, so we usually wear big hats or wrap towels around our heads. Across the street, the workers at the mall godown are always busy loading crates, and sometimes we wave to them during the lunch break. Inside the mill, it is loud and we have to shout a bit to be heard over the rumbling of the separators. The office is just a small room with a heavy iron safe and a couple of wooden chairs where we sit to write out the receipts. When the harvest season hits, we are here until very late at night under the yellow floodlights. It is a lot of heavy lifting, moving the 50kg sacks from the machines to the trucks. The road outside often has deep ruts from all the heavy traffic, and when it rains, it turns into a muddy mess that makes everything twice as hard.
