Monal Public School

Shimla is a beautiful place, but living here means you’re always walking up or down a hill. Monal Public School is located in Sanjauli, specifically in the Northok area, just below the main road. Because we are tucked away like that, it’s a bit quieter than being right on the street, but you still hear the echoes of the town. We get a lot of fog in the mornings, and during the winter, the kids show up all bundled in heavy wool sweaters and caps. The school isn't very big, so everyone knows each other’s names pretty quickly. We have a few levels to the building because of how the land slopes, so there are a lot of stairs to climb every day. It’s a good workout for the legs, if nothing else. The classrooms have big windows to let in whatever sunlight we can get, which helps keep the rooms from getting too chilly. We don’t have a big fancy auditorium, so we usually gather in the courtyard for whatever needs doing. Sometimes a stray dog wanders into the yard, and we have to shoo it out before class starts. It’s just a regular neighborhood school where we teach the local kids and try to keep them out of trouble. The parents are all locals who stop by to chat when they drop their children off. It’s a nice, simple community vibe that we have going on.
