Our shop, E S S Handicrafts, is tucked away in the cellar of Hardy Complex. Being on M.G. Road means there is always traffic and people rushing around outside, but down here in units 10 and 11, it’s a bit quieter. We deal with all sorts of handmade items. Most of what we have comes from small workshops, and we spend our time unpacking boxes and making sure everything looks okay on the shelves. It’s a bit cramped because we try to fit a lot in. You might find some dust on things occasionally, but that’s just part of keeping a shop in a basement. We’ve been at this for some time. It’s mostly just us keeping track of inventory and helping whoever walks down the stairs. Some people are looking for gifts, others just want something small for their house. We don’t really do big advertising or anything like that. People usually find us because they were already in the building or someone told them about the cellar shops. The lighting isn't the best, but we like the spot. It feels like our own little corner away from the main road noise. On rainy days, it gets a bit damp, but we just keep the fans going. It’s a simple business, really. We open up in the morning, sort out the new arrivals, and wait to see who comes by. It’s steady work and it keeps us busy enough.
