People know the name, but our corner at the General Engg. Div. is where the real daily stuff happens. It’s loud, it’s hot, and there is always some metal that needs shaping. We don’t spend much time in nice shirts. Most of the guys are in overalls that have seen better days. It is just the way it goes when you’re working with heavy machinery all day long. We start early, usually when the air is still a bit cool, and by noon the whole place is buzzing. It isn’t like those glossy corporate videos you see. There is dirt on the floor and the smell of grease is pretty much stuck in everything we own. We handle the bits and pieces that other departments might not focus on. It takes a certain kind of patience to stay in the engineering division for years. You get used to the rhythm of the hammers and the sound of the fans trying to move the air around. We mostly talk about what needs fixing next or whose turn it is to get the tea. There are no big speeches here, just the work that needs finishing by the end of the shift. It’s a bit of a maze sometimes with all the parts lying around, but we know where everything is. This part of the company is just about getting our hands dirty.
