We are located at Shop No 3 in the Laxmi Complex on Shardhanand Road in Ranchi. It’s not a grocery shop like some of the others around; we deal with iron and hardware stuff. Shardhanand Road is a busy place, and there are always trucks and rickshaws moving metal and construction materials. Our space in Laxmi Complex is mostly filled with heavy items, so it’s not exactly the cleanest place in the world. There’s always a bit of metal dust around, and the floor is concrete because we move heavy things. We’ve been operating as Burma Iron Syndicate for quite a while now. Most of our day is spent talking to contractors or people who are fixing up their houses. It’s a lot of physical work, measuring things out and making sure the orders are correct before they get loaded up. Ranchi has seen a lot of building work lately, so we stay pretty busy most weeks. We don't have a fancy showroom. It’s more of a warehouse feel where you can see the stock piled up against the walls. Dealing with iron is different from selling soap; it’s louder and a lot more strenuous on the back. We use old-fashioned scales and write our receipts by hand. The complex can get a bit congested in the afternoons when everyone is trying to load their vehicles at the same time. We just take it one customer at a time.
