Sorath Masala Gruh Udhyog

Our little workshop, Sorath Masala Gruh Udhyog, is in Patel Colony. We are on Street No. 9, right across from the Raj Shakti Pan House. It’s a very local spot. We do most of the spice making right here. It’s a small operation, what we call a Gruh Udhyog. This means it’s more of a home-style business. We spend a lot of our time cleaning the raw spices and then grinding them. The machines we use are old but they still work perfectly. The whole street usually knows when we are grinding chilies because of the sharp smell in the air. We don't have any big marketing budget. We just rely on the people in the colony and the nearby shops to buy our masalas. My wife and sister handle the packing. They sit on the floor and fill the small plastic bags and then seal them using a small heating machine. It’s a slow way to work, but we can check every single bag ourselves. We don't have a fancy office with air conditioning. We just leave the front door open to let the breeze in. Sometimes we sit on the steps and have tea with the owner of the pan house. We don't want to be a big corporation. We just like making good spices that people in our neighborhood can use in their cooking. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy.
