Gandhi Spices Pvt. Ltd. is right in the middle of Para Bazar at Golpith Chowk. It’s a very crowded market area. You can smell the different spices long before you actually reach our door. The shop is in an old building with high ceilings and wooden shelves that have been there forever. We keep the sacks of spices stacked up on wooden pallets. The floor is stone and it’s seen a lot of foot traffic over the years. During the day, the noise from the street is loud. There are carts and people pushing through the narrow lanes. We don't have much of an office, just a small desk in the back where we keep the ledger. Most of the work is done out front. We spend our time weighing things out and talking to the people who come in. It’s a very social place. We know the other shopkeepers around Golpith Chowk well. Sometimes we share a cup of tea on the front step when things slow down for a minute. The light inside isn't great, but we know where everything is even in the dark. It’s a simple way of doing things. We don't bother with modern decorations or fancy signs. The smell of the spices tells people exactly where we are. It’s just how things have been done here for a long time. There is always a lot of heavy lifting to do.
