Calcutta Jewellery Co. is right here in Rajkot, sitting in Ankara Chember just across from the Ashpura Mandir. It’s a good spot because the temple brings a lot of people to Palace Road. We get a lot of folks stopping in after they finish their prayers. We’ve been here for a long time, and the shop has seen a lot of history. It’s not a huge place, but we have enough room for our workbenches and the display cases. Most of our work is traditional, the kind of stuff Rajkot is known for. We have a few craftsmen who have been with us for years, sitting in the back and working on intricate gold pieces. You can hear the tiny hammers tapping away if you listen closely. We don't really do the whole modern marketing thing. We just sit here, talk to the people who walk in, and show them what we have made. Sometimes we have families who have been coming to us for three generations. It’s nice to see the kids grow up and then come back to buy jewelry for their own weddings. We keep things pretty simple. There is usually some incense burning near the small shrine in the corner, and the smell mixes with the tea we’re always brewing. It’s a comfortable place, even if it’s a bit old-fashioned compared to the new shops.
