Our school, Gmhps, is situated along the Gulbarga Road in Devadurga. It’s a spot that sees a lot of buses and trucks going past, but inside the gates, it stays relatively quiet for the students. The building is an older style, made of sturdy stone and concrete, and it has seen many groups of children come and go over the years. We have a playground that is mostly dirt, but it serves its purpose for football and running around during the lunch break. Inside, the classrooms have high ceilings which help a bit when it gets hot in the afternoons. The benches are old wood and have some carvings from students who were here decades ago. We don't have much in the way of high-tech gear, so we mostly stick to blackboards and textbooks. The teachers here are mostly from the surrounding villages and they walk or take the bus in every day. Sometimes the power goes out, so we just open the windows wider and keep going with the lesson. It’s a very basic setup, nothing like those private schools in the big cities. We focus on making sure the kids show up and get their work done. It’s a bit of a trek for some of the students who live further out, but they make it. We just keep the doors open and do our part. It is honest work and we have been doing it for a long time.
