Hydraulic Engineers

You can find us out in the village of Amdubi, which is near Sundarnagar in the Panskura area of East Medinipur. We are Hydraulic Engineers, and we’ve set up our workspace at Rabindranath Manna’s place. It’s a rural setting, so it’s a lot different than being in a big city like Kolkata. We deal with a lot of dust and the sounds of the countryside, but we like the quiet when the machines aren't running. The workshop is a bit cluttered with parts and tools, but that’s how you know work is actually getting done. We don't have a reception desk or a waiting room with magazines. If you come by, you’ll probably find us covered in a bit of grease or busy looking at a technical drawing. People from the surrounding villages know us, and word of mouth is mostly how we get by. We don’t do any big promotions. The work is hard and the hours can be long, especially when there’s a big project that needs finishing. We take our breaks under the shade when it gets too hot. It’s a very hands-on environment. There’s no corporate hierarchy here; we all just do what’s needed to keep the engineering side of things moving. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living out here in West Bengal, focusing on the mechanical stuff and not much else.
