If you go down to the Midc in Bhosari and find Ranade Road, you’ll see K C Toolroom at J-141. This is a heavy industrial area, so the air always smells like cut metal and coolant. Our unit is constantly humming with the sound of the lathe machines and grinders. We spend most of our time standing at the workbenches, making sure the measurements are right for whatever mold or tool we are working on. The floor is concrete and usually has some metal shavings scattered around, no matter how much we sweep. It’s not a place for fancy clothes; we all wear our old work shirts that can get dirty. We have a small corner with a stove for making tea, which is where we spend our breaks talking about the news or the football scores. The lighting is bright and overhead so we can see the fine details of the metal. Bhosari is a tough place to work because of the heat and the noise, but there is a sense of pride in seeing a finished tool ready for the customer. We don’t do any marketing; people just know we’re at J-141 when they need something made to a specific size. The workbench is scarred from years of use, and every scratch has a story. It’s just us doing our jobs day in and day out.
