Down in Weedmohallawallarhama, we have been working the fields for as long as anyone can remember. Anantnag Dachnipora Farmer Producer Company Limited is run by Farooq Ahmed Badru and a group of us who live in the area. We are right in the heart of the Dachnipora region, and the soil here is good if you know how to treat it. We spend our days dealing with the water coming off the mountains and making sure it gets to the right spots in the fields. It is a constant battle with the weeds and the weather. Some days the sun is so hot you have to stop at noon, and other days the rain turns the whole place into a swamp. We don't have any big mission statements or marketing slogans. We are just farmers. We grow what the land allows and we try to get a price that lets us buy seeds for the next year. We meet up at Farooq’s place to talk about who is buying what and how we can get a better deal if we all sell together. It is a practical way of doing things that helps us survive. We don't have fancy degrees or corporate training. We just have years of experience and a lot of sweat in this ground. It is a tough life, but it is a real one, and we like being our own bosses out here.
