You can find B.N.K. Modern Rice Mill (P) Ltd. out on Hostel Road in Abishekapakkam. We are at R.S. No. 101/1, which is a pretty large plot of land. Even though the name says "modern," the work still feels very traditional in a lot of ways. We spend most of our time dealing with the raw paddy that the farmers bring in. The machines are big and they require a lot of attention to keep them running smoothly throughout the shift. It gets very hot inside the mill, especially when the sun is beating down on the roof during the middle of the day. We have a lot of workers from the local village who come in every morning. The road outside can be quiet at times, but then a whole line of tractors will show up at once and everything gets hectic. We stack the rice bags high against the walls, and the smell of the grain is everywhere. It is a dusty job, and by the end of the shift, everyone is covered in a fine layer of it. We don't have a lot of fancy meeting rooms or anything like that. Usually, we just stand around the main floor or the entrance to talk about what needs to get done. It is a busy life here in Abishekapakkam, and the work never really stops as long as there is rice to be milled.
