Pallava Granite

Semakurthy is a quiet area but we stay busy with the stone. Our yard is filled with big slabs of granite that we move around with the crane whenever someone needs a specific color or size. It is a lot of heavy lifting and the guys are usually covered in stone dust by the time lunch rolls around. We have been working with stone for a long time, so we know which pieces are good and which ones have cracks that might cause trouble later. The ground is always a bit muddy if it rains, making it hard to walk between the stacks. We don't spend much time in the little office because most of the real work happens outside under the tin roof. The trucks arrive from the quarries at odd hours, so someone is usually here early to open the gates. It’s not the kind of job where you wear clean clothes for very long. Most of the people working here live nearby and walk to the site every morning. We just focus on getting the slabs cut and loaded without dropping anything. The sun can be quite brutal in the afternoons out here in the open yard. We have a small water tank in the corner for everyone to drink from and wash up. It’s just us and the stone all day long, trying to keep the orders moving along until the sun finally goes down.
