Jamui is quite a stretch of land, and over here in Laxmipur, life is mostly about the fields. We run things out of Vijay Kumar Mishra’s place in Karanpur. It’s not a big setup, just a house where we can keep our logs and meet up after the day’s work is done. Kala is the post office we use, but most of the actual work happens out in the dirt. We are just a bunch of neighbors who decided to put our names on a piece of paper so we could buy things in bulk. Farming in this part of Bihar isn't easy. The sun beats down pretty hard in the summer, and you have to be careful with the water. We grow what the land allows, mostly grains and some vegetables for the local market. We don't have any big slogans or goals other than just getting through the season without too much trouble. Vijay usually handles the paperwork because he’s got a bit more patience for it. We don't have any employees with fancy suits. It's just us in our lungis and dusty shirts. If you come by Karanpur, you'll see us under the big trees or walking along the bunds of the fields. We aren't looking to become a giant corporation. We just want to make sure the work we do actually puts some food on the table. It's a simple life and we are okay with that. There's not much else to it besides the work.
