Our place is out in the Vasai Taluka Industrial Estate, specifically over in Gauraipada. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here every morning, but this is where the work happens. Plot 198 is basically a big shell filled with machines and the sound of metal being worked on. It gets pretty hot in the afternoons, especially during the summer months when the fans just move the warm air around. We mostly deal with engineering parts and mechanical stuff that most people wouldn’t give a second glance to. There’s usually oil on the floor in some spots, so you have to watch your step. The office is just a small corner partitioned off so we can hear ourselves speak when the phones ring. We’ve been in this sector for a while, and we know most of the neighbors. Sometimes we borrow a tool or help someone out when their machine breaks down. It’s a practical environment. There isn’t any corporate polish here. We wear work clothes that get stained, and we drink a lot of tea to stay going. Orders come in, we figure out how to make them, and we ship them out. It is a straightforward way to make a living. Nothing more, nothing less. We just try to get through the production schedule without too many headaches or delays in the delivery schedule.
