Shyam Engineering Works

Shyam Engineering Works is right there at 697 Hamilton Road, which is in the Kashmere Gate area. If you’ve ever been to this part of town, you know how incredibly crowded and narrow the streets are. Our shop is an old one, and it feels like it’s been part of the neighborhood forever. We have tools and metal parts everywhere you look. It’s a bit dark inside because the buildings are so close together, so we always have the overhead lights on. Most of our day is spent at the benches or working with the lathes. The noise from the traffic outside on Hamilton Road is constant, but you kind of stop hearing it after a while. We get a lot of walk-ins, mostly people looking for specific repairs or a part they can’t find anywhere else. Our staff is just a few guys who have been doing this for decades. We don’t have a computer system for tracking things; mostly everything is written down in big ledgers or just remembered. It’s a very traditional way of working, but it’s what we know. The air usually smells like oil and metal shavings. It’s not a place for someone who likes a clean white office. We’re usually covered in a bit of grease by the time we close up for the evening. It’s just how engineering work is in a place like Kashmere Gate.
