Madan Jee & Co

Madan Jee & Co is located right in Chawri Bazar, just across from where the Moti Cinema Hall used to be. That cinema is a real landmark, so it makes it easier for people to find our shop in the middle of all the Chandni Chowk traffic. Our place is an old-style office with heavy wooden doors and big ledgers. We don't use much fancy technology here, mostly just the basics to keep our trading business running. The area is always loud with the sounds of carts being pushed and people haggling over prices. It’s a very old part of the city, so the streets are narrow and the buildings are packed tightly together. Inside the shop, it’s a bit cooler than the street, which is a relief in the summer months. We have an old ceiling fan that makes a clicking noise on the medium setting, but it keeps the air moving. Most of our day is spent talking to regular customers who have been coming to us for years. We know their families and their stories, which makes the work feel more like a community thing than just a business. Sometimes we sit on the benches outside for a bit of fresh air, even though the air isn't exactly fresh with all the dust. It’s just the way life is in this part of town, and we have been a part of it for a long time.
