Lachman Dass Jairam Dass

If you ever go down to the Timber Market in Sadar Bazar, you might see us at Plot No. 2803. We go by Lachman Dass Jairam Dass, which are the names of the men who started this whole thing a long time ago. The market is a very noisy and crowded place to work. There are always trucks backing up and people shouting to be heard over the sound of wood being moved. Our plot is mostly filled with stacks of timber of different sizes and types. We spend our days measuring wood and helping customers pick out what they need for their construction projects. It is a lot of heavy lifting, and your back definitely feels it by the end of the shift. We have a tiny office room in the corner where we keep the records and a small stove for making tea. The walls are covered in old calendars and notes written in pen. It’s not the kind of place where you’d wear a suit. We are usually covered in a bit of dirt and wood shavings. We have seen the market change a lot over the years, but our little spot stays pretty much the same. We don’t do any marketing, we just rely on the fact that people know we have been at Plot 2803 forever. It is a tough environment but we like the routine of it.
