Rahul Telecom is located in Habibpur village, which is just past Kuleshra. It’s a local shop where we mostly help people with their mobile phone connections and basic repairs. The shop is part of an older building, so the walls are thick and it stays somewhat cool even when the sun is out. We have a couple of glass jars on the counter filled with candies for the kids who come in with their parents. Most of our day is spent talking to neighbors who need help understanding their new smartphones or want to add some balance to their talk time. We have a small bench outside the shop where the older men from the village sometimes sit and chat. Inside, we have some posters of mobile networks that are starting to peel at the corners. There’s a wooden drawer under the counter where we keep the cash and a bunch of old receipts. I usually bring my lunch from home and eat it in the back room where we keep the spare stock. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except for when there’s a festival in the village and the street gets blocked with music and dancing. We know almost everyone who walks through the door by their first name, which makes the work feel a bit more personal.
