About Sona Mithai Wala – Food & Beverages in New Delhi
We have been operating out of Shahdara Bara Bazar 229 for a long time. This market is always crowded and the noise never really stops until very late at night. Our shop is old and we’ve kept it mostly the same as it was years ago. The floors are stone and they’ve been scrubbed so many times they’re almost smooth. We don't have fancy packaging or a big social media page. We just make the sweets in the back and put them in the glass cases in the front. Sometimes the flies are a nuisance in the summer, so we’re always waving them away and keeping things covered. It’s a family-run kind of place. We wake up early to get the milk and start the big pots. The heat from the stoves makes the whole shop warm even in winter. We don't use any special tricks. It’s just a lot of stirring and waiting. During festival times, it gets completely crazy here and we barely have time to sit down. People line up out the door and we just try to keep up with everyone. We aren't a big chain with a corporate office. It’s just us and the people who work the counters. We’ve known some of our customers for thirty years. They remember when we were much smaller. It’s a lot of hard work, but this is what we do here in Bara Bazar.
