S Sabherwal & Co is set up in House No. 41, which is one of the Janta Flats in New Delhi. Running a firm out of a Janta Flat gives it a very neighborly feel. It’s essentially a home-office where the line between work and regular life is a bit thin. You can usually find us surrounded by thick files and calculators, especially when it’s tax season or when we have a lot of audits to get through. The rooms are filled with the smell of paper and old ink. It’s a family-style business, so there isn't any corporate talk or formal dress codes. We just sit down and get to work on whatever the client needs. The flats can be a bit quiet during the day when everyone is out, which helps us focus on the numbers. We have an old wooden table that serves as the main desk and some steel cupboards for the records. People from the area often drop by to drop off documents or just to check on their work. We offer them some water or tea and chat for a bit before getting back to the ledgers. It is a very practical way of working, without any unnecessary extras. Sometimes the files get a bit disorganized, but we know exactly where everything is. We just keep our heads down and keep the accounts in order, day after day, in this little corner of the city where we live.
