Working in Palika Bazar is a unique experience. Our shop is at number 234, right in the middle of that underground circular market. If you’ve been there, you know it’s always crowded and there’s no natural light. You kind of lose track of time when you’re down here. We’ve been in this stall for quite a while now. It’s small, like all the shops in Palika, so we have to be very organized with how we stack our goods. There’s no room for extra furniture, just the shelves and a small counter. We see thousands of people walk past every day. Some stop to ask questions, some are just looking for the exit, and others are regulars who know exactly where to find us. It’s a lot of standing and talking. The air conditioning in the market can be hit or miss, so some days it’s quite stuffy. We don’t do any big promotions or have fancy signs. We just put our items out where people can see them and wait for someone to take an interest. It’s a very fast-paced environment because everyone is always on the move. When the market finally closes and we go up to the surface, the fresh air feels great. But we’ll be back down here again tomorrow morning, just like we always are. It’s a steady job and we’ve made a lot of friends among the other stall owners over the years.
