We run Cap And Gown Accessories India out of No. J-25 Dda Flats in Kalkaji. It’s a residential area, so it’s a bit different from a typical factory setup. We use one of the main rooms for the sewing machines and the other for storing the fabric and the finished gowns. It’s a family-run thing mostly. We make the caps and gowns that students wear for their graduation ceremonies. It’s a very seasonal business. Some months we are incredibly busy with stacks of black fabric reaching the ceiling, and other months it’s much quieter. The neighbors are used to seeing delivery guys carrying bundles of robes up the stairs. We don't have a storefront, so most of our business happens over the phone or through old contacts in the schools and colleges. The space is a bit cramped because we also live here, so you might see a tea kettle next to a pile of mortarboards. It’s a simple life and we’ve been doing this from the flat for years. We don't have any big corporate goals; we just want to make sure the zippers don't break and the hats fit right. Dealing with the Dda flat layout means we have to be very organized with our storage, or we’d never find anything. It’s just us doing our part for the local graduation season every year.
