Our workplace is tucked away in Phase-2 of the Okhla Industrial Area, at F-34/3. If you’ve ever been to Okhla, you know it’s a maze of factories and warehouses. It’s a very busy part of the city, and the roads are always full of delivery vans and workers. We spend our time here dealing with fashion garments. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds; it’s mostly a lot of cutting fabric, sewing seams, and checking for loose threads. The floor is usually covered in scraps of cloth by the end of the shift. We have a set of machines that have been with us for a long time, and we know exactly which ones need a bit of extra oiling to stay quiet. The light in the factory is quite bright so the girls can see the fine work they’re doing. We don’t have any fancy signs outside, just the address on the gate. Most of us take the bus or ride bikes to get here every morning. There’s a small tea stall just down the road where everyone gathers during the afternoon break. The heat in the summer can be quite something inside an industrial building, but we’ve got enough fans to keep the air moving. We just focus on getting the piles of clothes finished so they can be sent off to the shops. It’s hard work, but it’s what we do.
