Arba Metal is situated at Plot No. 619 on Cib Road No. 6. This is inside the Gidc Estate. It’s a very industrial kind of place. You hear metal hitting metal all day long. There is always a truck backing in or pulling out. The air smells like oil and iron. We have stacks of different metals all over the plot. It isn’t the cleanest place because of all the filings and scrap. We wear heavy boots so we don’t hurt our feet. The gate is usually open from early morning. My desk is covered in papers and some old tools. We don’t really have a place for visitors to sit, usually, people just stand around the yard and talk business. It’s a lot of counting and weighing. Sometimes we get some interesting pieces of scrap that look like they belonged to something big. We just sort them out and move them along. The road outside is always busy with other factory workers. We’ve been at this plot for a good amount of time. People in the Gidc know where to find us. We don’t use any fancy systems, just a big scale and some honest effort. It’s hard work, but it keeps us busy. The sun gets really hot on the metal roof during the afternoons, so we take our breaks then and drink plenty of water to stay cool.
